# Penetrating wounds like a gunshot or stabbing

If you or a friend have been shot or stabbed, call 911 right away. Regardless of the situation, the police should be notified and the injured person should be taken to the hospital.

#### Here’s what to do while you wait <a href="#id-3fv6n3dkpjlp" id="id-3fv6n3dkpjlp"></a>

* Control the bleeding.
* Do not attempt to remove the object, instead stabilize it. Removing it could lead to more bleeding. Apply pressure to the wound around the object.
* Watch out for signs of serious bleeding that could lead to shock. Read the **Shock** chapter to recognize signs of shock.

If a serious injury occurs, the best thing you can do for yourself or a friend is call 911 - never hesitate to ask for help! A life might depend on it.

**REMEMBER: Every phone, even without a payment plan, can call 911**
