Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A UTI is an infection of the bladder or kidneys. They are more common in women but can also affect men.

What to look out for:

  • Pain or burning when you pee

  • The need to pee more often

  • Blood in the urine

  • Fever, back pain, nausea, and vomiting are signs of a worsening infection

When to see a doctor:

A UTI almost always requires antibiotics from a doctor. Since it is not usually considered an emergency, you can visit an urgent care rather than an emergency room. If you’re having severe back pain, lightheadedness, or fevers, you should go directly to the emergency room.

A few ways to prevent getting a UTI:

  • Drink more fluid to help flush bacteria out of your bladder.

  • Pee right after sex.

  • Drink cranberry juice or other cranberry products whenever possible.
