Vaginal infection

Although some infections are sexually transmitted, an infection of the vagina may happen despite having safe sex and being clean.

Important

Not all vaginal discharge or leaking is from an infection. Women may have normal leaking, especially when you’re ovulating or about to get your period. What’s more important is to notice any changes in the color, texture, or smell. Most vaginal infections require help from a doctor to find out what bacteria or bug is the cause and to treat it. Many infections also require that your sexual partners be treated, otherwise, you risk re-infection.

What to look out for:

  • Strong smell - often described as a fishy odor

  • The discharge can look like cottage cheese or even be greenish-yellow

  • Burning or intense itching from below
